Epsom celebrates the success of its first Independents Day!
05 July 2010
Epsom's first ever Independents Day, led by The Ashley Centre,
took place Saturday 3 July 2010. The day celebrated and raised the
profile of independent retailers in Epsom, and attracted shoppers
from far and wide.
More than 40 independent retailers throughout Epsom offered
shoppers exclusive discounts or promotions and the public enjoyed
live music from Realistic Rock Academy and The Swanee Jazz Quartet.
Children were entertained with a treasure trail around the shops
plus rides in the market place, as well as face painting and
balloon modelling. Radio Jackie broadcast live from the market
place and gave away bags of goodies from lots of the independent
stores.
The Ashley Centre General Manager David Beddows said: "It
was fantastic to see such a buzz in Epsom as the town celebrated
Independents Day! I spoke to a number of store managers who said
they had a busy day and importantly, had new customers into their
store. The initiative certainly raised the public's awareness of
Epsom's unique and hard-working independent retailers."
Shopper Caroline Davey of Ewell said: "We had a great day
and went into stores that we never knew were there before. There
were some nice cafes involved as well as a hog roast so we managed
to eat our way round the town."
Retailer Karen Sloggett of Suddies Domestic Appliances in
Waterloo Road said: "Saturday was awesome!
From the hundreds of people that I spoke to the feeling was
that the town had really come together and it was described as a
carnival feel. My sales increased but I think the most important
part of the day was standing outside the shop and just chatting to
the locals. We were very excited about positive vibe that we
have felt and can't wait to do it again next year!"
