Winning Choir Announced
06 January 2009
Epsom's Ashley Centre in conjunction with the Epsom Playhouse
recently hosted a 'BBC Last Choir Standing' style competition to
find the best local choir in the area.
The four competing choirs performed for late night shoppers at the
Centre during the run up to Christmas. They then battled it out in
a competition on Saturday 20 December before a panel of judges
including Deputy Mayor Councillor Jean Steer, Epsom Light Opera
singer Janet Holah and General Manager of the Epsom Playhouse
Trevor Mitchell.
The Ashley Centre Marketing Manager Diana Cordova said: "We are
delighted to announce that the winner is The Beacon School Choir
from Banstead. This choir comprises staff and students and has only
been established for four months but were astonishingly good.
The competition was fierce, and the other three choirs put on
a great show but at the end of the day the judging panel agreed
that The Beacon School were the deserving winners."
Head of the Judging Panel, Playhouse Manager Trevor Mitchell said:
"We were thrilled to be judging such high quality performances. The
Beacon School Choir will now perform a Gala Concert on the Epsom
Playhouse stage on Friday 27 March. Proceeds from tickets sales
will be distributed evenly between the winning choir and the Ashley
Centre¹s chosen charity, The Children¹s Trust,
Tadworth."
The Beacon School Choir competed with Song Squad, Contempo and The
Vale Primary School Choir, all of whom impressed the judges. Many
supporters turned out for each choir and there were some emotional
performances. The Choirs added to the Christmas atmosphere in the
Centre and there is a lot of enthusiasm to repeat the competition
in 2009.
